Not So Anonymous Overeater

It's been suggested to me several times that I attend Overeaters Anonymous.  I have never quite felt it was for me.  Perhaps embarrassment in admitting my problem in front of strangers.  Perhaps the spiritual aspect of turning yourself over to a higher power.  In recent years I haven't been terribly spiritual.  But obviously, this new me, ready for change, has gotten over his fear of proclaiming his inability to control himself in the presence of a cheesy, meat laden, slice of pizza.  Ah pizza, I'll miss you. But we'll meet again in the future, when we can have a healthy relationship.

The point of The Drive to 195 Project was for me to make my own Overeater's Not-So-Anonymous.  By creating this blog and letting the world in on a secret everyone knew anyway, I have established a network of "sponsors".  Sponsors create a sense of accountability, a sounding board, and source of knowledge and experience.  I have fortunately have achieved these needs, through you all, my journey partners.  No, I won't be able to call you at 3AM and tell you that I am jonesing for a Whopper, or that I'm strung out on Peanut M&Ms.  But I have such a strong feeling of commitment to this thing that I don't see myself in that position.  Call it naivete, or just plain ignorance, but that is the place I am in right now.  I feel strong.  I feel confident.  I also feel so accountable that if I did ever stray, I would be forced to admit it.  The "no one will know" thought has frequently crossed my mind and fortunately it has been easily vanquished.

So thank you all, my sponsors.  I have indeed given myself over to a higher power than I once knew.  The power of hope, the power of strength gleaned from others, the power of the new me that is indeed possible.

Cya tomorrow,
M

Move it AND Lose it

Show me a fat man that says he likes exercising and I will show you a liar or someone who stops at Mickey Dee’s on the drive home to reward himself.  Seldom does an industry, like fitness,  thrive and make so much money off of something that makes people so miserable.  Okay, so there are Dentists and Proctologists, but at least that is only a few times a year.  I know the feeling of accomplishment that comes from a successful exercise session, but while it is in progress, my god does it suck.  For me, the sense of pride that comes from knowing I sucked it up and walked micro-mini marathon just isn’t enough to make me want to go back.  Exercising is, in my warped view at least, a necessary evil.  Evil, because it is so hard.

I started this project on the 6th of February in the throes of a real bad back situation.  I have struggled with back issues for years, quite likely the result of my weight.  It’s gotten better over the last two weeks and I should really start to move.   Walking is going to be the best way for me to begin the process.  Being the middle of winter, it’s not the best time to be out and about, but I’m more inclined to do that than go to the Y or even worse a gym.  We do have a very expensive treadmill in the basement but the basement is about 20 blogs worth of explaining.  My days of excuses are behind me because the world is watching.  I owe it to me.  I owe it to my wife.  I owe it to the dozens of people who have enough interest in my life to take time from their busy day to check in on me here.  So for now, my neighbors will be seeing my smiling face walking by on a regular basis, muttering obscenities through the smiling teeth they see.  On the bright side, it will be an ever shrinking me.  Maybe Mike.2 will feel better about working out in a gym.
Let’s get interactive here.  I would love to see more comments.  I know you are out there reading because as of this Friday night we should top the 1000 page view mark.  (How cool is that?)  What do you do to exercise?  I want to hear from you! And please share this with your friends, family and collegues.  This isn't just about me.  It's about anyone who struggles with food.
Off to a gig at The Publick House in Chester, NJ.

Kale Chips...They're the New Pringles!

Okay, so maybe I am stretching it a bit.  They certainly don't stack up the way those scrumptious little potato waves do, but I will say that when I made a batch of kale chips today for the first time, the initial few bites actually reminded me of Pringles.

I think I might dedicate Thursdays to cooking.  If you have been to my home and I have fed you, you would likely say that I am a very good cook.  This isn't bravado, it's echoed in the rave reviews and awards that have come in over the years and I have framed and mounted near the front door.  Okay, if you have been to my home you know that last sentence is a lie, but you also know that I know food.  I know how to make it taste good.  As my brother often says, scary good.

A major principle in my philosophy of weight loss is that you have to embrace new and different foods.  Let's face it, what you have been eating has only contributed to ever shrinking pants and dimples on your ass.  If you are fussy and unwilling to try new things, you are sabotaging your chances of significant weight loss.  Change it up.  Expand your palate.  Here are some foods I have recently found that I love, are super nutritious, and have become staples in our house.

Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein, and reasonably rich in calcium.  It's cheap and easy to cook.  The kale chip recipe below took just a few minutes and I gobbled them up quicker than, well, quicker than something quick.  I got nothing here.

Kabocha Squash is also known as Buttercup Squash or Japanese Pumpkin. It is rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin C, potassium, traces of calcium, folic acid, and minute amounts of B vitamins. Talk about a super food!  This winter squash is similar to butternut squash but much more flavorful, and to me, has an overtone reminiscent of cantaloupe.  It's a pain in the ass to dispatch one, removing the skin and seeds, but the rewards are worth the effort.  I can find it easily at my local Stop-n-Shop.  Look for one with an orange blush on one side, indicating it was allowed to ripen properly on the ground.

Nuts and Seeds are a rich source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber.  You need to be careful with these because of the fat content, but adding some toasted sliced almonds, walnuts, pumpkins seeds (aka pepitas), or sunflower seeds make a crunchy and tasty addition to salads, soups and stews.  I just throw mine in the toaster oven on the same settings I would use to toast bread.  If they need longer, do it again.  Don't just leave them to toast in a pan or in the oven, because they burn too quick.

Brown rice is so much better for you than white rice.  It is filling, high in fiber and has a nice nuttiness to it.  Learn to have it in place of potatoes or white rice.

So put on your big person pants and try some new healthy stuff.  If you don't like it, at least you tried and I applaud you.  But when you find that you truly enjoy what you eat, success is so very much easier.  Next Thursday I will cover some kitchen tools that make using these and other ingredients easier to cook and that I couldn't do without.

Cya tomorrow,
M

KALE CHIPS:
I prefer black kale, also known as lacinato kale, dinosaur kale, or Tuscan kale.  Mostly because it will lay flat on the sheet pan and is more "chiplike".  But either black or curly kale will work fine for this recipe.

Ingredients: 1 bunch of kale, 1 TB olive oil, 1.5 Tsp garlic salt

Preheat oven to 275.  Slice the center rib from the kale and cut it into 1.5" pieces.  Wash and dry THOROUGHLY!  If they are damp they will just steam in the oven.  I have a salad spinner that is indispensable in the kitchen.  In a 1 gallon Ziplock bag place the oil and garlic salt.  Let them mix and coat the inside of the bag.  Put the kale in the bag and when almost sealed, fill the bag with air to make it baloonlike.  Roll the kale around inside until it has a sheen and is well coated.  Place on a sheet pan and bake for 30 minutes or until crisp, turning half way through.  Toward the end of my batch I turned off the oven and let them coast.

What I ate today:
Breakfast: Kashi Island Vanilla cereal w/Vanilla Almond Silk and a banana
Lunch:  1/2 a roasted veg. panini on multi grain bread and a hint of pesto.  Wasn't good.
Mid-afternoon snack: Starbucks' Decaf Skinny Caffe Mocha
Dinner: Kabocha Tofu curry over brown rice and steamed kale.  One of my favorites.  If you don't like tofu, try baking cubes at 400 degrees until the outside is crispy.  Bet it changes your mind.
After dinner blog writing snack: That plate of very crisp kale chips pictured above.  They rocked.

"What's in My Head Wednesday"

I've taken this blogging thing very seriously.  I have a page on my laptop where I jot down talking points I'd like to cover, but there is always a fear that I might not have something to write about on any given day.  And I really want to do this everyday.  It's kind of cathartic.  So in an effort to be sure the well doesn't run too dry, I had the idea to do a weekly feature or recurring theme as it were.  Thus, "What's in My Head Wednesday" was born.  Not sure why, but really don't like typing out the word Wednesday.  So from here on out it will be referred to as WIMHW.  Well that wasn't all that easy either.  Screw it.  You know what day it is.  The point is to give you, my journey mate, some insight into where my psyche is at in this point of the project.  This is no easy road I have to hoe and I am sure that if you have struggled with food, alcohol, smoking, eating couch cushions or cigarette ashes (Strange Addictions on TLC), or what ever, you know what I mean.

Truth is, I feel pretty damned good about myself as of late.  I am ever vigilant about what pitfalls might arise and I still have many, many temptations, but I am able to have much shorter arguments in my head about them. My Devil: "Michael, you really want that appetizer that has the goat cheese.  It's only once and you can eat just a little."  Michael: "No I can't.  Shut the fuck up."  Done deal.  It's nice to win an argument for a change.  Even if it is just with myself.
Note to sensitive readers: Sorry for the language.  It's limited, but it does come out and I am trying to keep this real so that if you don't already know me...you will.

I am trepidatious in my feeling of achievement.  I can't celebrate.  Keep the eye on the prize. I know I won't miss whatever it is I am passing on deep down.  But I do have that fear that I might cave.  And that my friend is a good thing.  That fear of what might happen gives me instant resolve.  That "one day at a time" mantra is too neatly packaged for me.  Fact is that everyday is fraught with many battles.  So it is one battle at a time.  Today was a heavily embattled day.

For those who don't know, I am a manufacturer's rep in the electronic component industry.  I won't get into what that means, but the short of it, I am in sales.  Today started with a stressful meeting at 8AM.  I didn't make time for breakfast and had one hour's worth of windshield time between my 8AM lobotomy session and the next appointment.  My theory is, better to eat breakfast as smartly as you can, then to skip breakfast all together.  So today breakfast was a small decaf and an Egg McMuffin w/o the Canadian bacon.  280 calories and about 9 grams fat.  The battle was over the hash browns and Canadian bacon.  Love those buggers.  Happy to report it was a one round knockout.  Tempted, but didn't give it serious consideration.  The smart thing would have been to preplan and remove all temptation.  Hey, it's only nine days in and I am still working out the smart thing.

Lunch was a business lunch as was dinner.  Three meals dining out today was a scary proposition.  I handled all with great aplomb and I came home tonight damned proud to have not succumbed.  I am not on a diet, I am making a lifestyle change.  Today was a major step toward living in the real working world as a healthy person.  Chalk one up for the big guy.

Pardon the length of today's offering.  My head is a vast space and if you know me well, brevity ain't my strong smoot, as they say.

Cya tomorrow,
M

What I ate today:

Breakfast ~ Meatless Egg McMuffin w/decaf and 1 creamer
Lunch ~ Salad with a wee smidge (literally 1 tsp?) of balsamic dressing on the side.  The salad had mesclun greens, 3 oz grilled salmon, carrots, walnuts, chick peas, roasted red peppers and artichokes.  Squoze some lemon over it.  The peppers and the artichokes gave so much flavor that the dressing seemed unnecessary.  Really enjoyed it.  Tip:  Just drag your fork through a little bit of dressing before skewering that bite.
Dinner ~ Roasted beet and arugula salad, lightly dressed.  Grilled salmon with roasted eggplant and radicchio.  Decaf w/1Tbs 1/2 & 1/2.  Oh yeah, I was social and had a nonalcoholic beer beforehand.

The No Post, Post

There won't really be any content today because of two factors.  The wife and I, aka Two For The Road, have a gig tonight in Roselle Park, NJ.  I usually write these in the early evenings.   Secondly, there was a screw up in how my posts were being handled in facebook (ever notice facebook has no capital F?) and most people haven't gotten anything in days.  So, there is plenty for all to read anyway.  I'm trying to inform, entertain, and get healthy.  Too much content will feel like a chore to my readers and I want you coming back.  So Happy Valentine's Day and enjoy the night off from my prose.

Tune in tomorrow for "What's in My Head Wednesday".

Thanks to MaryAnn Petraitis for this line: "Onward and downward!"
Cya,
M

What I ate today:
Breakfast ~ Kashi Island Vanilla w/Vanilla Almond Silk, a banana and about 1Tb of toasted almonds.  Decaf w/So Delicious Hazelnut Coconut Creamer (Not Bad.  Better than Silk)
Lunch ~ An Un-Turkey Pita sandwich and a 1/2 tomato/ 1/2 avocado salad, lightly dressed with a homemade citrus chipotle dressing.
Dinner ~ A big bowl of hearty minestrone (See "Go with the Flow" post for recipe.)

Week 1 Weigh-in

Well, here we are.  The start of week 2 and this morning I had my first weigh-in.  I have very much been looking forward to this.  Something new for me.  I've always stepped on that bugger with trepidation, half expecting the readout to say something like "Weigh one person at a time, please." or "Jesus! Do you mind?!".  I have a set routine for this activity.  We "narrowness impaired" folk are very fastidious when doing something so scary as stepping on a scale.  First off, you don't eat or drink anything, EVER before weigh-in.  This is why it is done first thing in the morning.  Secondly, evacuate, aka lighten the load.  Delicate enough for ya?  Lastly, strip off everything.  Not even glasses or jewelry are worn.  Trim your toe nails and get a haircut if you have to.  This is in the fat person's manual and must be strictly adhered to.  Okay, so I don't trim my nails or spit before the process, but I do all the other things...and no, I don't have OCD.

I have had much success this past week.  I feel good.  I am not craving anything.  The devil on my shoulder seems to be on hiatus for the time being.  I will get into more about my psyche this Wednesday with a new weekly feature called, "What's in My Head Wednesdays".  Original, huh?
At the risk of being redundant, I would like to thank the many people who are on board with my idea for a public forum/support system.  I am blown away by the VERY personal stories messaged to me and I am happy to be part of your journey as well.  Together we can do this.  And to my wife Tabitha, you have been so very cognizant and respectful of my desire to do this my way and your ideas and offers of help are very much appreciated and welcome.  I can't do this without your buy-in and you get that.  Thanks, honey.

So down to business.  Last week I started this project and boldly announced to the world that I weighed a whopping 363.4 lbs.  I would have been okay with a loss of 5lbs after this hard work in week one.  The over/under for you betting folks was 8lbs and I was thinking right around there. I'll post a pic of the scale each week to fend off thoughts that I might be fudging.  SO, as of this morning, (drum roll, please) I now weight 350.4lbs.  Down exactly 13lbs. Yay me.  The old me would be tempted to celebrate such successes by indulging "just a little".  Those demons are insidious in the ways they try to undermine us, eh?  I plan on celebrating by having that gold star up there.  Also, just by staying the course while understanding that this was most likely the biggest drop I will see in a single week.   On to another day.

Cya tomorrow,
M

What I ate today:
Breakfast ~ Amy's Breakfast Burrito w/ 1 Tbs low fat sour cream and 2 Tbs chipotle salsa.  Decaf w/2 Tbs 1/2 & 1/2
Morning snack ~ Starbucks venti decaf skinny Mocha Caffe (for those who count, 200 calories in venti, 160 in grande, 100 in tall)
Lunch ~ Mu Shoo Basil roll and "pork" fried rice at Veggie Heaven in Denville, NJ.  The imitation pork is actually very good.
Dinner ~ Black Bean Chipotle burger on an English muffin, side salad of arugula with a green apple salad dressing.

Go With the Flow

flow /flō/ n. the mental state of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.  Have you ever known someone to say "I was so busy today, that I forgot to have lunch." ? I always wanted to punch those people and tell them they were full of shit. I mean jeez! I am thinking about lunch perhaps while I am having breakfast. Then one day it happened to me. Once I learned about "flow", I understood.
As stated above, flow is achieved when you are soooo involved at what you are doing, that time and everything else for that matter, become irrelevant. I learned this recently when I was spending a weekend cleaning out the garage. I started at around 10AM and was doing a DEEP cleaning and purge to make room for a car. This was a foreign concept in our house for years. A car in the garage?   Foolishness! Around 4PM I realized that I hadn't had lunch. I wasn't hungry. Honestly I don't know what hunger feels like. My fat stores could feed an island nation for more than a week. It was then I understood flow. I was so into what I was doing that I wasn't thinking of food. The flow silenced the devil on my shoulder.
I have come to realize increasing those moments of flow is essential to staying on track and silencing the devil. So find what gets your proverbial juices flowing. Find what you can get immersed in and do it. It is not only what will make you happier, but what will keep you from being "hungry".   I guess idle hands are the devils' work. Especially that one whispering in your ear "french fries", "Snickers bar".

What I ate today:
Breakfast ~ Kashi Island Vanilla cereal w/Vanilla Almond Silk and 1 banana
Lunch ~ Un-turkey salad sandwich (I love these things) and a bowl of home made Brussels sprout soup
Dinner ~ A big bowl (actual picture above) of hearty minestrone soup w/whole wheat fusilli. Recipe below
Dessert ~ A mug of decaf w/2Tbs 1/2 & 1/2
The wife just brought me some carrots with hummus, while writing this and watching the Grammys.
I cannot wait until weigh in tomorrow. I have seldom been so true to and excited about something as I am in this project.

Cya tomorrow with the weigh-in results,
M

Hearty Minestrone:  (Inspired by Cooking Vegetarian by Melina/Forest)
4 cups vegetable stock
1 Tbs EVOO
1 cup 1/2 inch diced carrots
1 cup diced celery
1/2 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 14.5oz can of crushed tomatoes
2 cups diced fresh tomatoes (sub canned if you like)
1 cup water
3 Tbs tomato paste
1 tsp dried basil
1.5 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp fresh ground pepper
1 cup zucchini sliced 1/4 inch bite sized pieces
1 cup kale sliced into roughly 1/4 inch ribbons
1 cup green cabbage sliced roughly 1/4 inch ribbons
1/2 14.5oz can of canellini beans, rinsed
1/2 14.5oz can of chick peas, rinsed
3-4 large leaves basil, sliced in thin ribbons
Optional are 1 cup potato cut into 1/4 inch dice or a whole wheat pasta upon serving.
Over medium-high heat in a large stock pot, heat oil and add carrots, celery, garlic and onions. Cooked for 5 minutes stirring often so they do not brown. Add tomato paste, dried basil, oregano, celery seed, salt and pepper. Cook for 2-3 more minutes stirring often. The mixture should be very aromatic and tomatoey. Add stock, diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, water, and potatoes if included. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 18 minutes. Add kale and cabbage. Simmer for 2-3 minutes then add zucchini, beans and chick peas (You can use any legumes you like).  Cover and simmer for 5-7 minutes longer, adjust seasoning to taste and enjoy . I like mine with more fresh basil and some grated parmigiana cheese on top.
