The Healthiest Fat Guy You Know?

I was at a doctor's appointment last month and had my blood pressure taken.  After finishing the nurse said "That can't be right."  I assured her it probably was.  So she took it again and announced "Hmm!  113 over 72."   My resting heart rate was 72. I've been very lucky.  To say that I am healthy would be entirely off the mark, because no one is healthy when morbidly obese but here are some facts.  At 48, I take no medications at all. I do have sleep apnea and use a fancy machine to keep me breathing regularly at night. More to keep my snoring from waking the wife really.  My cholesterol hovers around the 135 mark. Triglycerides and all the other measurements they take when you get your physical done are perfectly normal.  Okay my B12 levels are slightly low but that is normal for someone who has had gastric bypass surgery.

In July of 2001 I underwent gastric bypass.  And while they tell you it's not a magic bullet, and you do grasp that, you cling to some possibility that it is what will make you, well...normal.  It does take hard work post-op and I did work hard.  I lost almost 200 lbs form that surgery and life was looking bright.  Still is of course.  But what they didn't rectify in that surgery was my addiction.   I have slowly gained about 70+ lbs of that weight back.  My take on the situation is that I failed the surgery.  It didn't fail me.  I will delve more into the gastric bypass and more thoughts about it another time.  I did want to let you, my readers and partners on this journey, have all of the facts.  People might say when my weight is coming of, "Yeah.  But he had that weight loss surgery.  Of course he can lose weight."  If only it were that easy.

I have been very fortunate to maintain a fairly unremarkable medical record.  But I know my luck won't last.  Staying this course I have been on will surely catch up with me and I have too much to do and see yet.

What I ate today:
Breakfast ~ Multi Grain Cheerios w/banana and decaf coffee 2Tbs 1/2 & 1/2
Lunch ~ raw veggies with roasted pepper hummus
Dinner ~ 1/2 of an Amy's Breakfast Burrito and 2 big bowls of homemade minestrone soup.  Great stuff.

Tomorrow I will tell you how my wife tried to kill me 3 years ago.  Cya then.

  1. OK so I am on Weight Watchers. I never went before. I attended a meeting and it boils down to this. They weight you, ask your age, and height and male/female (duh) Then they come up with a number of point that you are allowed per day. They also give you 49 "bonus" points to spreak out over the course of the week. i.e. if you want a glass of wine.... So I got 26 points. Joe got 33 points, and my 17 year old- 43 points. Weight watchers has changed it points system. They do not count fruit. It's a zero so it's free. They also have an app for the I phone, I pad, and Driod smart phones. You scan basically any item in the grocery store, and it tells you how many points it is. It's easy, and kind of fun. Today I had an egg, scrambled in pam. 3 points. A light Thomas english muffin 3 points. 1 Tbs whipped butter 2 points. 2 apples free. 1 cup of Progressor light chicken soup 3. 3 ritz 3 points, 1 4oz chicken breast grilled 5 points, fresh string beans free, salad free. 1tsp olive oil 1. Chewed a lot of GUM free. I have 6 points for a treat. Not bad. If you are interested, I have the calculator. I can figure your points, and you could sign on to my Weight Watchers page to check it out and see if you might like it. You do not have to go to the meetings, you can join on line. I will keep you updated. I am happy for you, keep up the good work. I think I am addicted too.

    1. Great work Chris! Proud that you are taking control. Thanks for the offer on the calculator. For this leg of the project I am going things based on my years of knowledge I have gained but never put to good use. Careful with the gum. From what I recall it can actually make you hungry by stimulating certain digestive processes without the food. Don't quote me on that but google it.
